The BIG Project 2006
As you may know, the BIG Project is the result of a bit of hard saving over the past few years. The idea behind it is that we bought something a bit larger than average with monies created from magazine sales. In the summer of 2006, we finally found two projects to fit the bill. The report on the completion of the main one - a large well in Afganistan, has now been sent to us. Here is a summary with pictures.
Afganistan is a country ravaged by war, drought and famine.Because of security worries, many relief agencies have had to move out of certain regions. The need for water is critical with women and children spending valuable hours and energy walking to the nearest suppy - many of which are contaminated. Muslim Hands charity installs durable hand pumps with monies raised in the UK. 'Poetic Hours' has paid £550 for the pictured pump to be put in.

THE WATER PROJECT

The second part of the 'Big Project' was a joint water and sanitation development. This was sited in the region of Putalam, Sri Lanka in the village of Pallivasalthurai at the home of a 48 year old labourer Umar Khan Mohamed Mohideen with seven children. Engineers fitted a tubewell (similar to those we have paid for before) with an electric pump and also built an outside toilet. This will ensure a supply of fresh water for the family. In addition King Coconut, Mango and Guava plants have been put in to assist with home gardening.
